Weezer’s debut album -- known as the Blue Album -- is a touchstone of mid-'90s alternative rock. With a sound that skillfully fuses the raucous energy of punk, the loser-friendly geekiness of indie rock, the guitar power of grunge, and the huge hooks of radio rock -- then adds some heavy metal guitar heroics and Rivers Cuomo's oddball lyrical perspective -- the record is at once familiar and box fresh. Not only did it become a huge hit with a handful of classic singles -- the goofy “Undone (The Sweater Song)," the cheerily romantic “Buddy Holly,” and the downcast “Say It Ain’t So” -- it was influential for a generation of emo kids who latched onto the sensitive loner persona Cuomo’s lyrics and earnest vocals portrayed. The record also filled a gaping hole for people looking for loud rock that wasn’t bubbling over with testosterone, and this band proudly wears its dorkiness like a badge throughout, even when happily digging into hard rock cliches. That may make it sound like Weezer were mercenaries in some ways, but they were just kids making the music they wanted to hear. That it resonated with so many people was just dumb luck, as the band would likely be the first to admit. That said, there is a great deal of craft behind the big, dumb hooks, and there's absolutely no filler. Songs like the rollicking “My Name Is Jonas” does a nice job of balancing acoustic guitar filigrees and heavy metal crunch, the vocal harmonies on “No One Else” are tight and help sweeten the sour tale of jealousy a bit, “In the Garage” is a beautiful coming of age ballad, “Surf Wax America” is just a flat-out great rock & roller, and "Only In Dreams" works as a perfectly epic way to end the album. The band also had the good fortune of scoring Ric Ocasek -- someone who knew a thing or two about making catchy rock music -- as producer and he does a fine job of keeping things simple. Because of that, the Blue Album sounded great at the time -- able to knife through radio airwaves like a missile -- and it still doesn’t sound dated. It’s a timeless geek rock classic that has never been topped, by Weezer or anyone else, though many have tried.

Chastity Belt take cues from both the politics of the riot grrrl scene and the intricate, moody guitar-based sound of early-'90s bands like Sleater-Kinney and Autoclave. While their 2013 debut No Regerts deftly balanced goofball wit and feminist satire, principal songwriter Julia Shapiro moved into deeper and more personal themes on 2017's I Used to Spend So Much Time Alone and 2019's Chastity Belt as their music became more nuanced and sophisticated. Recorded after a five-year layoff (caused in part by the COVID-19 pandemic), 2024's Live Laugh Love added a dash of the group's old wit while anchoring the songs in their languid guitar interplay.

Chastity Belt formed in Walla Walla, Washington, in 2010. The band consisted of lead vocalist/guitarist Julia Shapiro, bassist Annie Truscott, drummer Gretchen Grimm, and guitarist Lydia Lund. The group quickly integrated irreverent humor into their seemingly serious musical presence. Apart from witty and cutting lyrical content, the band named their first locally circulated demo recordings F*** Chastity Belt and later shot press photos that portrayed Shapiro wearing a chastity belt made out of a raw steak. They continued this trend when releasing their proper debut, No Regerts, in 2013, subtly but intentionally misspelling "No Regrets" as one might on a horribly, ironically botched tattoo.

South Florida's Jack Off Jill is a sultry version of what Marilyn Manson could be, but not entirely a passionate foursome. Formed in 1992, Jack Off Jill's raging stage presence and lyrical intensity brought the band national recognition without the powerful backing of major-label support or industry management. Enigmatic frontwoman Jessicka, bassist Robin Moulder, drummer Laura Simpson, and guitarist Ho-Ho Spade released a handful of 7"s and a slew of EPs, including their Marilyn Manson-produced debut EP cassette, Children 5 and Up, in the mid-'90s. Gumball's Don Fleming was next in the production seat for the band's first full-length, 1997's Sexless Demons and Scars, and the Covetous Creature EP followed a year later. Jack Off Jill returned in mid-2000 to release their dark sophomore effort, the Chris Vrenna (ex-Nine Inch Nails) engineered Clear Hearts Grey Flowers. Their career retrospective release, Humid Teenage Mediocrity: 1992-1995, was issued in 2006.

Arriving earlier than expected but last as planned, Green Day's third album of 2012 concludes their pop-punk trilogy not on a triumphant note but on one of confusion. Green Day's blueprints for 2012 and beyond may have been trashed by Billie Joe Armstrong's unexpected entry into rehab but that doesn't alter the albums themselves, which aren't necessarily a carefully constructed trilogy but rather an outpouring of energy, the group pushing out every completed song it had. ¡Tré!'s two predecessors had clear identities: ¡Uno! was the arena rock record; ¡Dos! was the punk-garage lark. In contrast, ¡Tré! feels like leftovers, the songs that didn't fit either theme, a collection of songs capturing the band at its loosest and poppiest, throwing away tunes without much care. It's hookier and not as ponderous as ¡Uno! but not quite as breakneck as ¡Dos!, never delving into the sleaze of "Fuck Time," never feeling like a last grasp at adolescence the way ¡Dos! did at its best. Instead, ¡Tré! is a morning-after record, sometimes regretful, sometimes unrepentant, divided between unapologetic partying and amends for their wayward ways. On the whole, ¡Tré! winds up on the happier side of the scale: the rhythms are insistent, the hooks immediate, the veneer bright and cheerful, never once regretting the chaos that happened the night before. But underneath this good time is the slight, perhaps unconscious, admission that things cannot continue as they did before. There is not the desperation or the hedonistic pulse that ran through ¡Dos!, but rather a shrugging admission that the time for partying is over. So there's a bittersweet undertow to ¡Tré!, a feeling underscored by Armstrong's rehab: he could no longer continue trying to recapture his youth, but dammit if he doesn't come close to doing so at times throughout ¡Tré!

Two days after the release of ¡Uno!, the first installment of an ambitious punk-pop trilogy from Green Day, Billie Joe Armstrong checked into rehab for various substance problems, problems that reached a head during an on-stage meltdown at a radio festival the weekend prior to the album's release. Needless to say, the band's complicated plans for 2012 and 2013 were adjusted, with the supporting tour scrapped and the concluding LP ¡Tré! moved up from January to December. Amidst the chaos, the one thing unaffected was ¡Dos!, which appeared according to schedule in November of 2012. While certainly cut from the same cloth as ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! has a different feel than its cousin. Green Day pushed all of their Who-inflected arena rock onto the first of the albums, leaving ¡Dos! a high-octane collection of garage pop and hooky punk. At the outset, Billie Joe declares it's "F*** Time," and he's not entirely kidding, either. This is the "Makeout Party" album, a breakneck sprint through songs about girls ("Ashley," "Amy"), wild ones, and "Nightlife," the latter awkwardly incorporating a rap from Lady Cobra. Armstrong spits out profanities as he thrashes on his guitar, pounding out hooks that dig in immediately, possibly because they recall anything from '60s frat-rock to '70s punk. In that sense, ¡Dos! recalls Green Day's terrific 2008 busman's holiday Foxboro Hot Tubs (indeed, "F*** Time" began as a FHT song), but this feels more hedonistic, even if the production is crisper and clearer than Stop Drop and Roll!!!! Maybe it's all due to the knowledge of Armstrong's post-recording breakdown, but he feels positively desperate to have a good time at all costs, grasping for a quickly fading past. Clearly, all the partying caught up to him, but while he was racing recklessly, he cut this terrific little party record.

Hot off the Road the band cut this record at Shock City Studios in St. Louis, Help Yourself is a masterclass in contemporary electric blues with a fearless rock & roll edge. This isn't just a record, it's a live-wire session that puts you right in the room with two of the genre's most respected artists and their all-star band.

"It was great to capture the band live in the studio, just like live on the stage," says Zito. That live spirit pulses through every track, from the swaggering, wordplay-heavy title track "Help Yourself" to the soul-baring emotion of "Alive," a deeply personal love letter born out of loss and redemption. "Alive is about my girl Jackie," Zito shares. "After the tremendous loss of my wife Laura, I was certain life was pretty much over, especially for love. But God had another plan and brought me this angel to make me feel alive again."

Castiglia brings his own grit and truth to the mix, especially on "Can't Be a Prophet," a biting reflection on life on the road and the contrast of coming back to earth after being treated like royalty on tour. "It's based on all of our experiences," he says, "being treated like a King, and coming home to very little fanfare for the local guy."

The band, featuring Scot Sutherland on bass, Lewis Stephens on keys, and the dual-drum attack of Matt Johnson and Ray Hangen delivers with undeniable groove and precision, lifting each track with soulful dynamics and relentless drive.

BUCKINGHAM NICKS, the only studio album by Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks as a duo, will be reissued for the first time on September 19. Originally released in 1973 and unavailable for decades, the album has been sourced from the original analog tapes for its CD release.

Released on September 5, 1973, BUCKINGHAM NICKS quickly faded from commercial view but never disappeared from the cultural conversation. Recorded at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles and produced by Keith Olsen, the album introduced Nicks and Buckingham’s tightly wound harmonies and sharply contrasting songwriting voices across 10 tracks—ranging from the folk-rock shimmer of “Crystal” to the sunbaked strut of “Don’t Let Me Down Again.”

Its legend only grew with time. In late 1974, Mick Fleetwood visited Sound City while scouting studios to record Fleetwood Mac’s next album. To showcase both his production work and the studio’s sound, Olsen blasted “Frozen Love” for Fleetwood in Studio A. The song reflected the full scope of the album’s ambition and chemistry—and immediately caught the drummer’s attention.

Soon after, when Fleetwood Mac guitarist Bob Welch left the band, Fleetwood reached out to offer Buckingham the spot. Instead of agreeing, Buckingham insisted that he and Nicks were a package deal. Fleetwood agreed, and on New Year’s Eve 1974, the two officially joined Fleetwood Mac — launching one of the most celebrated chapters in the band’s history.
