(2023) Forest Bees - Between The Lines

Review:
Between the Lines is the second album from Bay Area-based Forest Bees, the solo project of Sheetal Singh, formerly of the Elektra and Jetset Records shoegaze band, The Stratford 4. The album explores the effect of racial categories on our lives and, as the title suggests, the position of Asian Americans within those categories and how we might be able to transcend them. It asks the question, stated by writer Thomas Chaterton Williiams: “To what extent are the things that happen to us predetermined by our identity categories, and to what extent is that just the blues of being alive?” All songs written and recorded by Sheetal Singh except All That Damage, written by The Stratford 4 (C.Streng, J. Hosek, S.Singh, A.Caturegli) and All Blues (inspired by the composition by Miles Davis, lyrics by Oscar Brown Jr. and Eugene Field, from the poem Lady Button-Eyes). Mixed and produced by Maryam Qudus at Best House, Berkeley, CA. Vocals on tracks 3 and 4 recorded by Monte Vallier at Ruminator Audio in San Francisco. All tracks mastered by Amy Dragon, except tracks 3 and 4 mastered by Heba Kadry. Additional drum programming on tracks 1-4 and 9 by Anthony Georgis. Additional guitars on tracks 4, 7, and 9 by Chris Streng. Modular synth on track 4 by Chris Otchy. Additional synths and backing vocals by Maryam Qudus. Track 2 contains a sample from Longing and Desperation by Matt Davis. Cover art by Rita Liu and production by Jonathan Larson and Brandon Tomovic. Photography by Colleen Eversman. — bandcamp
