"Mirra" is a concept album by the Norwegian Hardanger fiddle player, composer, and author Benedicte Maurseth. It serves as a follow-up to her award-winning 2022 album "Hárr," this time focusing on the wild reindeer of Maurseth's home region of Eidfjord in Hardanger. The title "Mirra" is an old, forgotten dialect word from Hardanger that describes reindeer running together in a circulating pattern for warmth and protection. The album's compositions follow the distinct sounds and annual cycle of the reindeer, reflected in track titles like "Kalven reiser seg" (The Calf Rises) and "Sommarbeite" (Summer Pasture). The music integrates field recordings of nature, with one track featuring 13 different animals, and blends the suggestive repetitions of folk music with influences from American minimalism, Krautrock, and free improvised music. The album was created in close collaboration with musicians Håkon Stene (melodic percussion), Mats Eilertsen (bass), and Morten Qvenild (keys, electronics).
