Apocryphos – Ultimum Saeculum (2025)
Review:
The prolific Apocryphos (Robert Kozletsky) is back with his sixth album, a slab of haunting dark ambiance dappled with field recordings. One of the notable aspects of this effort is the emphasis on analog synth techniques that add a certain human warmth to the recording – a degree of sonic imperfection. Coupled with sparse clicks, pops, crackling, and light percussive elements, these shifting drones ask the question of what one would do at the end of the world. If given 24 hours before the Earth’s demise, would one ruminate in sadness and loss, be motivated to find an inner peace, or do something else altogether?
Each track is timestamped and represents a different emotional answer. This inquiry is embodied, as examples, with watery manipulations on 0800 (Amentalio) and scrabbling sounds on 2000 (Lachesism). The 12-minute 0000 (In Death) includes metal-on-metal scraping noises. But the main emphasis throughout these tracks are the deep, melancholy drones and long-held synth chords. Ultimum Saeculum closes not with resolution but instead a sustained sigh – a poignant reminder of our lives’ fragility in the face of oblivion. — avantmusicnews.com
