RETRO WORKS showcases two distinct sides of Bernard Hoffer’s compositional voice. Three Diversions (1975), written for the New York Saxophone Quartet, capitalizes on the extraordinary doubling abilities of New York’s top woodwind players. Each movement explores a different world: a timbral fugue built from only two notes; a surreal fantasy where Mendelssohn, dreaming under the influence of wine, is led by saxophone-wielding Horsemen of the Apocalypse; and a ragtime finale with space for improvisation. Celestial Symphony, a five-movement studio piece, evokes cosmic themes — love, Saturn, supernovas, and infinity — through a blend of synthesizers, electric instruments, and soaring vocals. |
