La trama di L'ultimo Vermeer (2020). Un artista è sospettato di vendere un dipinto di grande valore ai nazisti, ma dietro questa storia c'è molto di più.
Le storie di Joseph Piller e Han van Meegeren si erano incrociate durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale.
Il primo, ebreo olandese, ha combattuto nella Resistenza; il secondo era dedito a ricevimenti e feste nonostante il conflitto in atto. In tali occasioni, vendeva opere d’arte ad alti ufficiali nazisti, trafugandole così dal Paese, sempre più sferzato dall’oppressione del nemico.
Al termine della guerra, Piller è divenuto un investigatore, incaricato di identificare e ridistribuire l'arte rubata dai nazisti. Giunto sulle tracce di van Meegeren e dopo aver raccolto numerose prove, Joseph è in grado di accusarlo di collaborazionismo, un crimine punibile con la morte. Eppure, nonostante testimonianze e dati inoppugnabili, progressivamente Piller sembra essere sempre più convinto della possibile innocenza di Han. Con il contributo della sua assistente Minna Holmberg, Joseph si troverà così nell’imprevedibile posizione di poter salvare la vita di quell’uomo…
