Un professore di criminologia, partita la famiglia per le vacanze, rimane solo e si reca a cenare al club. Prima di entrare, ammira in una vetrina il ritratto di una bellissima donna. Dopo cena rimane a leggere in un salotto e finisce con l'addormentarsi. Sotto l'influenza del ritratto ammirato e dei discorsi uditi, fa un sogno. Gli sembra di avere un'avventura con una bella ed elegante signora - che è poi la donna del ritratto - quando improvvisamente un uomo anziano entra nell'appartamento dove essi sono e si precipita violentemente su di lui tentando di strozzarlo. Il professore afferra una forbice e con essa colpisce l'aggressore. Per far sparire le tracce del delitto carica il cadavere nella sua automobile e nella notte lo getta in campagna. Ma qualcuno l'ha visto entrare nella casa della donna...
