La bella locandiera Mirandolina è corteggiata dal nobile ma spiantato marchese di Forlimpopoli e dal ricchissimo conte di Albafiorita, mentre soltanto il suo cameriere, Fabrizio, è davvero innamorato di lei. La donna, cui sembra bastare, per il suo piacere l'attenzione che suscita negli uomini, non concede nulla a nessuno dei tre, ma ha cura di tenerne, abilmente, in sospeso le speranze. Un giorno capita nella sua locanda, della quale è ospite anche l'avvocato veneziano Carlo Goldoni, il cavaliere di Ripafratta, burbero spregiatore delle donne. Mirandolina giura a se stessa di farlo innamorare, e così avviene. Soddisfatta, la locandiera allora accorda la sua mano a Fabrizio.
Die schöne Wirtin Mirandolina wird vom edlen, aber mittellosen Marquis von Forlimpopoli und vom sehr wohlhabenden Grafen von Albafiorita umworben, während nur ihr Kellner Fabrizio wirklich in sie verliebt ist. Die Frau, die zu ihrem Vergnügen genug zu sein scheint, die Aufmerksamkeit, die sie bei Männern erregt, gewährt keinem der drei etwas, sondern achtet darauf, ihre Hoffnungen auf Eis zu halten. Eines Tages kommt er in seinem Gasthaus an, wo auch der venezianische Anwalt Carlo Goldoni, der Ritter von Ripafratta, eine grobe Verachtung für Frauen, zu Gast ist. Mirandolina schwört sich, ihn zum Verlieben zu bringen, und so passiert es. Zufrieden gibt die Wirtin Fabrizio die Hand.
