Charlotte Hollis, una signorina avanti negli anni, vive tutta sola nella villa lasciatale dal padre, con l'unica compagnia di un'anziana governante e il peso di incubi provocati dal ricordo di John Mayhew, l'amante che secondo l'opinione pubblica lei stessa ha trucidato orrendamente. Per questo i due cercano di farla impazzire con una serie di macabre trovate, assecondati nel tentativo dalla stessa vittima incosciente, che ancora sogna l'amante morto e crede continuamente di avvertirne l'invisibile presenza. Quando, come conseguenza di un ultimo feroce trucco, la diabolica Miriam ed il suo partner credono di essere finalmente riusciti nella loro impresa, Charlotte li uccide.
